Smelters gathered on Park Point and at the mouth of the Lester River last Friday. Brothers Luke and Kyle Nelson sported a brand new seine (smelting net) that raked in a bucketful of the silvery smelt on Park Point. At Lester River, smelters used dip nets to catch the fish as they funneled into the mouth of the river from Lake Superior. It was dark and cold but fisherman lit campfires to stay warm. Smelt are typically breaded and deep fried… a true north shore delicacy that has these fisherman returning each year.
