Rules of Play

Like most games, there are also rules. Participants have what is called swag; usually something small in value like a pencil, button or medallion. When you find a cache, you can leave your swag in it and take someone else’s out. Always remember to leave something if you take something. Also remember to return the Geocache exactly where you found it. If you can’t find the Geocache, make sure to log the cache online with “Didn’t find it,” so the cache owner will be notified when their cache is missing.

Geocaching a safe and fun way to connect nature with technology. It’s important, however, to protect the environment when participating. As long as the Geocache does not cause material disturbance to a park’s natural features or negatively impact natural or cultural resources, it is permitted. To set up a Geocache at an administered state park or trail, you will need to fill out some paper work: Minnesota permit form / Wisconsin notification form. To play, just sign up at

Some pieces of swag are also knows as Trackables; items etched with a code that can be logged on and followed as it is moved from cache to cache. Some Trackables travel hundreds of thousands of miles! If you discover a trackable, be sure to log its movements! Some Trackables, called a Travel Bugs, have certain goals, such as traveling to every country. If you find one, you can become part of its journey. If you want your own trackable to follow, you can purchase it from ShopGeocaching.
